Well, the plans for Rio have been scrapped. Aylesse's dad spoke to Delta and he told us that it would cost at least $700 just to change our plane tickets. I don't think it's worth it to spend 4 nights in Rio, plus I would also have to pay for the hotel, taxi transportation, the bus from SP to Rio, food, booze, etc. And I really need to save money since I'm going abroad in the fall and I want to stop in Peru for a week to hike Machu Picchu after I leave Argentina. Not to mention the drama between Aylesse and Amanda. Rio's not going anywhere and I definitely want to visit someday...maybe when the exchange rate is a little better.
The SEE-U program is scheduled to end on the 28th, but I don't depart Sao Paulo until the 30th. So I had planned on just booking a cheap hostel and bumming around SP for a few days alone, hopefully getting by with my (very) limited Portuguese. BUT last night I checked the Marriott website and found a US$60 employee rate at the Renaissance downtown (rooms are usually $350!!), which was recommended by the NY Times as the #1 place to stay in SP. Sick. AND I discovered that another girl on this trip, Hannah, is spending a few days in SP as well, and she was looking for a place to stay. SO not only do I have a 5-star hotel room for two nights at $30/night, I also have a city-exploration partner! Sweet.
